for a well ordered and just society

Our Mission

Kosma Institute exists to recover the classical understanding of law, politics, and public authority as reasoned ordering for the flourishing of the community. Law is neither an accumulation of historical accidents nor a vessel for judicial will. In the tradition that runs from Aristotle and Aquinas through the jurists of the American founding, law is a rational ordinance, promulgated through legitimate authority, and directed toward the peace, Justice, and prosperity of the political community. That understanding has receded from American public life. Kosma Institute exists to restore it.

Our mission is to form students, scholars, lawyers, and statesmen capable of carrying that inheritance into the institutions that govern the nation. We reject the thin proceduralism of the present age and seek a public philosophy capable of governing a real people in a real polity. The common good cannot survive as a slogan detached from institutions, offices, and habits of judgment. It must take form in law schools, journals, fellowships, courts, agencies, legislatures, markets, and civic life. Kosma Institute advances this work through competitive fellowships, policy and research papers published in Lex Kosma, a national law school society, and accessible legal education, training the next generation of public leaders to reason from first principles, act within lawful office, and rebuild the conditions of a well ordered and just society.
